Zugarramurdi Witch Museum

A museum in a former hospital that reveals the dark legacy of the Basque witch trials and the infamous akelarres held in nearby caves.

In the remote village of Zugarramurdi, nestled in the Navarre region of northern Spain, lies a place where myth, fear, and history converge. The Zugarramurdi Witch Museum (Museo de las Brujas) occupies a former hospital and delves into the harrowing events of the 17th-century Basque witch trials, one of the largest witch hunts in European history.

In 1610, the Spanish Inquisition targeted this village, accusing dozens of residents of witchcraft. Of the approximately 7,000 cases investigated, 53 individuals were found guilty, and 11 were executed by burning at the stake in nearby Logroño. The museum's exhibits chronicle this dark chapter, showcasing artifacts like Kabbalistic books, dried mandrake roots, witches' garments, goat heads, and cauldrons. Interactive displays also explore the social and cultural origins of witchcraft legends and the role of the Inquisition in perpetuating fear and hysteria.

Just a short walk from the museum are the Zugarramurdi Caves, natural limestone formations that once served as gathering places for alleged witches. These caves, with their vast chambers and eerie ambiance, are said to have hosted akelarres—witches' sabbaths—where rituals and ceremonies took place under the cover of darkness. The largest cave, known as Akelarrenlezea, features a natural tunnel 120 meters long and up to 12 meters high, carved over centuries by the Orabidea brook, ominously nicknamed 'Infernuko erreka' or 'Hell's stream'.

Today, the museum and caves offer visitors a poignant journey into a past where superstition and injustice reigned, serving as a somber reminder of the dangers of mass hysteria and the persecution of the innocent.
