Witch Museum in Prästmon

Witch Museum in Prästmon (Häxmuseet i Prästmon) is located in the village of Prästmon, in Kramfors municipality, and presents a focused look at Sweden’s witchcraft history, especially the infamous Torsåker witch trials. The museum forms part of a local cultural heritage commitment to remember the victims of accusations and executions.

One of the central themes is “Det stora oväsendet” (“The Great Noise”), the period between 1668–1676 during which a wave of witch hunts swept across Sweden. In 1675, 71 people, mostly women, were executed in the Torsåker trials — the largest known mass witch trial in Swedish history.

The museum’s location is significant: it lies in the same area as Bålberget (Witch Mountain / Pyre Mountain), where many of the trials’ executions took place. A memorial stone now marks that execution site. The museum connects names, documents, local lore and artefacts to convey how beliefs, fear, and social dynamics led to persecution.

In addition to the witch-related exhibits, the building also houses a puppet museum (puppets from Raja Theatre) — providing a wider cultural context to the local heritage program.
