Whydah Pirate Museum

The Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, tells the extraordinary story of the Whydah Gally — a former slave ship captured by pirates and wrecked off Cape Cod in 1717. Discovered by explorer Barry Clifford in 1984, it remains the only verified pirate shipwreck ever found, with over 200,000 artefacts recovered from the site.

The museum’s centrepiece is the Whydah’s massive bell, whose inscription confirmed the ship’s identity. Surrounding it are coins, pistols, swords, navigational tools, and personal items that belonged to the crew of Captain “Black Sam” Bellamy — a figure both feared and romanticised in pirate lore. Interactive exhibits and multimedia displays reveal the harsh, violent, and often short lives of those who sailed under the black flag.

Far from the swashbuckling myths of Hollywood, the museum portrays piracy as a desperate and dangerous way of life driven by rebellion and survival. The recovered artefacts, still encrusted with salt and sand, carry a haunting sense of authenticity — a direct connection to one of the darkest and most fascinating chapters of maritime history.
