Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Waverly Hills Sanatorium, located in Louisville, Kentucky, opened in 1910 as a hospital for tuberculosis patients at the height of the “white plague.” At a time when the disease had no known cure, thousands of men, women, and children passed through its halls — many never to leave. The vast, Gothic-style complex became a place of both desperate hope and unimaginable suffering.

Treatments ranged from fresh-air cures on open porches to experimental procedures such as lung surgery and balloon inflation of the chest cavity, many of which were brutal and ultimately ineffective. The death toll was staggering, with some estimates suggesting tens of thousands of lives lost within the walls of Waverly Hills.

Stories of the sanatorium’s infamous “Body Chute” — a tunnel used to discreetly transport corpses away from the hospital — fuel its dark reputation. Today, Waverly Hills is a magnet for paranormal investigators and thrill-seekers, with countless reports of ghostly apparitions, shadow figures, and unexplained sounds echoing through its decaying corridors.
