Warsaw Uprising Museum

The Warsaw Uprising Museum stands as a bold tribute to one of the most tragic and heroic chapters of World War II. Opened in 2004 on the 60th anniversary of the uprising, the museum occupies a former power station and plunges visitors into the chaos, suffering, and defiance of a city fighting for its freedom.

The uprising began on August 1, 1944, as part of Operation Tempest. For 63 days, the Polish resistance battled German forces in a doomed effort to liberate the capital before Soviet forces arrived. The result was catastrophic—over 200,000 civilians were killed, and much of the city was reduced to rubble.

The museum features immersive exhibits, audio recordings, underground replicas, weapons, personal letters, and haunting photographs. A 3D aerial film, “City of Ruins,” takes visitors on a flight over post-uprising Warsaw—an urban graveyard of ash and stone. Bullet holes, hidden bunkers, and the stories of teenage resistance fighters give voice to a city sacrificed.
