Voodoo Authentica

Voodoo Authentica is a French Quarter cultural centre and retail space focused on Louisiana Voodoo (Vodou) and related African-diaspora spiritual traditions. Operating since the 1990s, it presents itself as practitioner-owned and oriented towards education as well as commerce, with ritual goods such as oils, candles, gris-gris, charms, and handcrafted items displayed alongside altar-like arrangements and devotional imagery.

The site’s darker interest lies in its position at the boundary between private practice and public curiosity. Voodoo in New Orleans has long been defined by misunderstanding, sensationalism, and fear-driven folklore, and a venue like this reflects how a stigmatised tradition becomes visible in a tourist city while still carrying associations with curses, spirit-work, protection rites, and communication with the dead.
