Vikingemuseet Ladby
Denmark’s only Viking ship grave, where a chieftain was buried with his ship, weapons, and animals over a thousand years ago.
Vikingemuseet Ladby on Funen preserves one of the most fascinating and sombre Viking Age discoveries in Denmark. Around the year 925, a powerful chieftain was laid to rest in his longship, which was hauled ashore and buried in a large mound. Alongside him were placed weapons, treasures, and even the remains of horses and dogs, sacrificed to accompany their master into the afterlife.
What remains of this extraordinary burial is today displayed inside the original mound, where visitors can step directly into the ship grave and see the outlines of the vessel and the haunting traces of the burial gifts. The museum exhibition expands on the find with reconstructions, artefacts, and insights into Viking funeral customs, warfare, and beliefs about death.
The atmosphere at Ladby is uniquely dark and evocative, combining archaeology with the raw reality of Viking burial rituals. It offers a rare chance to come face to face with the final resting place of a Viking leader and the sacrifices made in his honour.
