Viking Ship Museum Roskilde

The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde is Denmark’s premier centre for Viking maritime history. Established after the discovery of five scuttled ships in Roskilde Fjord in 1962, the museum preserves these remarkable vessels, which once formed a blockade to protect the medieval town from seaborne attack.

The five ships — a mix of warships, cargo vessels, and smaller boats — date to around the 11th century and reveal the scope of Viking shipbuilding, from sleek longships designed for raids to sturdy traders that connected Scandinavia with the wider world. Their preservation provides invaluable insights into seafaring, warfare, and daily life during the Viking Age.

Beyond the exhibition hall, the museum includes a working boatyard where traditional techniques are used to reconstruct Viking ships. Visitors can watch shipwrights at work and even sail aboard reconstructed vessels in the summer months, offering an authentic sense of Viking life on the water.
