Târgoviște Princely Court – Vlad the Impaler’s Capital
The former capital of Wallachia and the seat of Vlad the Impaler, where he ruled with an iron fist and carried out his infamous punishments.
Once the political and military heart of Wallachia, the Târgoviște Princely Court served as the seat of Vlad the Impaler in the 15th century. This fortress-palace was where he issued his brutal justice, striking fear into his enemies and solidifying his ruthless reputation.
The most famous part of the complex is Chindia Tower, a red-brick watchtower built by Vlad himself. It was used for defense and as a symbol of power. According to legend, the courtyard saw many of Vlad’s victims impaled as a warning to those who opposed him.
Today, the ruins of the palace and the reconstructed Chindia Tower stand as a reminder of a time when Vlad ruled with terror. The site offers a glimpse into his reign, with exhibits displaying medieval weapons, historical artifacts, and stories of his bloody punishments.
