Trakošćan Castle

Trakošćan Castle rises above forests and a man-made lake near the Slovenian border, one of Croatia’s most visually striking castles. Originally built in the 13th century as a defensive fortress, it later evolved into a noble residence, most closely associated with the Drašković family, who shaped the castle into its present Romanticist form during the 19th century.

Inside, the castle functions as a museum, preserving furnished rooms, weapon collections, portraits, and everyday objects that reflect aristocratic life across centuries. Thick walls, narrow staircases, and enclosed chambers give a strong sense of separation from the outside world, reinforcing how castles like Trakošćan were both homes and instruments of control.

Beyond its historical role, Trakošćan gained cult status in horror cinema as the filming location for Dracula (1974), where it stood in as Count Dracula’s castle. Its isolated position, dramatic silhouette, and mist-prone surroundings made it a natural choice. Standing by the lake or moving through its dim interiors, it’s easy to see why the castle slips so effortlessly between romantic beauty and gothic menace.
