Tower of London

A royal palace turned prison, torture chamber, and execution ground—where ghosts walk and centuries of violence echo through stone walls.

Rising over the Thames for nearly 1,000 years, the Tower of London is one of the most infamous and haunted landmarks in England. Originally built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has served as fortress, palace, prison, armory, and site of numerous executions—earning its grim reputation through centuries of royal intrigue and brutality.

One of the most chilling tales is that of the Bloody Tower, believed to be the last known residence of the young Princes Edward and Richard. Imprisoned by their uncle Richard III, they disappeared without a trace. Skeletons found hidden beneath a staircase in 1674 only deepened the mystery. Their ghostly forms are said to still wander the tower, lost and afraid.

In the basement, visitors can view the Executioner’s Axe and block—a sobering relic used in the beheading of high-profile prisoners such as Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey. Elsewhere, the Tower houses ravens, medieval torture devices, and stories of spectral figures like the White Lady and the headless Queen Anne.

As you saw firsthand, there’s an overwhelming amount of history to take in, with each corner revealing another layer of shadow. The Tower of London is more than a museum—it’s a monument to fear, power, and the cost of treason.
