The Ten Bells

Located in the heart of Spitalfields, The Ten Bells is one of London's most chilling and infamous pubs. Dating back to the mid-18th century, this traditional East End pub is best known for its unsettling connection to the Jack the Ripper murders.

Two of Jack the Ripper’s known victims, Mary Kelly and Annie Chapman, were said to have regularly visited The Ten Bells before their gruesome deaths. It is widely believed that Chapman was last seen drinking here before she was murdered just a few streets away. The pavement outside of the pub was where Mary Kelly picked up clients as a prostitute.

Between 1976 and 1988, the public house was named "The Jack the Ripper", and memorabilia relating to the case were displayed in the bars. The brewery ordered the change back to its original name after a long campaign by Reclaim the Night demanded that a murderer of women should not be commemorated in such a fashion.

The pub is mentioned in the graphic novel From Hell (1999), about Jack the Ripper. The film adaptation From Hell (2001), also features the pub, including a scene showing Johnny Depp having a drink with victim Mary Kelly.

With such a dark past, it’s no surprise that The Ten Bells has a reputation for paranormal activity. Visitors and staff have reported ghostly apparitions, disembodied whispers, and the unsettling sensation of being watched. One of the most infamous ghost stories involves a spectral figure dressed in Victorian clothing who appears in the upstairs rooms, only to vanish into thin air.

Despite its haunting atmosphere, The Ten Bells remains a popular pub, drawing in both ghost hunters and history enthusiasts eager to experience its eerie charm.
