A subterranean museum beneath Buda Castle that once served as a secret emergency hospital and nuclear bunker during Hungary’s darkest hours.
Hidden beneath the Buda Castle Hill lies the Hospital in the Rock, a formerly top-secret facility that functioned as both a wartime emergency hospital and a Cold War nuclear bunker. Originally built into natural caves and reinforced tunnels, the hospital was first used during World War II to treat wounded civilians and soldiers during the Siege of Budapest.
It was later expanded during the 1950s into a classified nuclear bunker designed to withstand chemical and atomic attacks, equipped with decontamination showers and air filtration systems. The facility remained operational in secrecy until the end of the Cold War.
Now open to the public as a museum, it offers guided tours through dimly lit corridors, reconstructed wards, operating theatres, and eerie mannequins that depict the harrowing conditions endured during wartime. Exhibits cover Hungary’s military history, civil defence, and the chilling realities of life under threat of nuclear warfare, making it one of Budapest’s most intense historical experiences.
