The Grini Museum
A museum on the site of Grini, Norway’s largest Nazi prison camp, documenting incarceration, resistance, and everyday life under occupation.
The Grini Museum is located at Ila in Bærum, on the grounds of what was Grini prisoner-of-war and detention camp during the German occupation of Norway in World War II. From 1941 to 1945, more than 20,000 people passed through Grini, making it the largest camp of its kind in occupied Norway.
The prisoners were primarily Norwegian political detainees, resistance members, intellectuals, journalists, and others considered a threat to the occupation authorities. Although Grini was not an extermination camp, conditions were harsh, with overcrowding, forced labour, punishment, and constant uncertainty. Many prisoners were later deported from Grini to camps in Germany.
The museum preserves original buildings and exhibits personal objects, documents, photographs, and testimonies that focus on daily life inside the camp. Rather than presenting large-scale military history, the exhibitions centre on individual experience: arrest, imprisonment, survival strategies, solidarity, and the long aftermath of incarceration.
Location: At Ila, on the former Grini camp site in Bærum. Even that it belongs to municipality of Bærum, it is just at the border of West End Oslo. There is a bus station outside of the museum.
