The Dunhill Hotel – Charlotte’s Historic Haunting

Opened in 1929 as the Mayfair Manor, the Dunhill Hotel is one of Charlotte’s most beloved historic landmarks—and also one of its most haunted. Though beautifully restored and known for its elegant charm, the hotel carries a legacy of mystery and unexplained phenomena that have lingered for decades.

The most well-known spirit is Dusty, a mischievous ghost said to haunt the halls and elevator. Guests and staff have reported doors knocking on their own, blinds opening and closing without reason, and the elevator arriving at empty floors. Some believe Dusty may be the spirit of a man who tragically fell—or jumped—down the elevator shaft during the building’s early years.

Room 906 is often cited as the most active, with visitors reporting cold spots, strange tapping sounds, and electronics malfunctioning. Despite these tales, many guests (yourself included) have had a peaceful and pleasant stay—perhaps proving that even haunted hotels can be more charming than chilling.
