The Brno Dragon

The Brno Dragon is one of the city’s most famous and unsettling curiosities, suspended from the ceiling inside the Old Town Hall (Stará radnice). Despite its name, the creature is in fact a stuffed crocodile, believed to have arrived in Brno in the late Middle Ages, likely as an exotic gift or curiosity from distant lands.

According to legend, the “dragon” terrorised the city, killing livestock and threatening residents until it was defeated through trickery rather than force — lured into swallowing a poisoned carcass or trapped by cunning townspeople. The story echoes classic medieval monster myths, where fear of the unknown is shaped into moral tales of ingenuity and survival.

What gives the Brno Dragon its lasting power is the setting. Hanging in a civic building rather than a museum, it blurs the line between folklore and official history. For centuries, visitors and locals alike have walked beneath it, accepting the monster as part of the city’s identity. It is a reminder of how easily myth becomes tradition — and how real fear can grow from misunderstood objects brought in from the outside world.
