Temple of Apollo (Delphi)

Temple of Apollo stood at the centre of the sanctuary of Delphi, regarded in antiquity as the navel of the world. Dedicated to Apollo, god of prophecy, light, and order, the temple was most famous as the seat of the Delphic Oracle, whose pronouncements shaped wars, colonisation, and the fate of entire cities across the ancient Mediterranean.

Inside the temple, the Pythia — Apollo’s priestess — delivered prophecies while seated above a sacred chasm. Ancient sources describe vapours rising from the ground, inducing trance-like states in which the god was believed to speak through her. Whether mythologised, ritualised, or geologically real, the experience positioned the temple as a liminal space: a point where divine knowledge crossed into the human realm.

Though associated with light and harmony, the Temple of Apollo carries a darker undertone. The prophecies were often ambiguous, leading to catastrophe as often as salvation, and the sanctuary enforced strict sacred laws backed by divine punishment. Ruined columns and foundations remain today, overlooking the Pleistos Valley — a place of immense beauty and quiet dread, where certainty was never offered, only fate.
