Swedish Prison Museum

A poignant exploration of Sweden’s penal history, housed in two historic prison buildings in Gävle, tracing punishment practices from the 16th century to late 20th-century reform.

The Prison Museum of Sweden (Sveriges Fängelsemuseum), located in Gävle, is dedicated to documenting the evolution of Sweden’s prison system and societal views on crime and punishment.

The museum occupies two former prison facilities: the Castle Jail (Slottshäktet), dating from 1732, once used for pre-trial detainees and showcasing earlier punitive methods like public pillories and shame logs; and the County Prison (Länsfängelset, built in 1847), constructed under the Philadelphia model of solitary confinement. This prison, nicknamed “Hotell Hamilton,” became known as “Sweden’s friendliest prison” by the time it closed in 1986.

Museum exhibits guide visitors through centuries of penal evolution—from medieval witch trials and gallows to modern debates about rehabilitation and inmate rights. Three cells have been preserved in their original state: cell 3 from around 1850, cell 38 circa 1900, and cell 40 as it looked in 1986—offering visceral insight into changing conditions.

In 2024, a new Joe Hill Visitor Center opened on the ground floor, honoring the labor activist and songwriter who was born in Gävle and later executed in the United States.

Audio guides in Swedish, English, or German are included in admission, and the museum’s authentic setting—housed within former cells and corridors—adds emotional weight to its narrative. Visitor reviews describe the museum as educational, thought‑provoking, and historically immersive.
