Located on a small island in the middle of Snagov Lake, Snagov Monastery is said to be the final resting place of Vlad the Impaler. Built in the 14th century, the monastery was once a place of refuge and a prison for political enemies.
Legend claims that after Vlad’s death in battle, his loyal followers secretly brought his body here for burial. However, when his supposed grave was excavated, it was found empty—fueling rumors that his remains had either been stolen or that he had never been buried there at all.
Visitors can explore the monastery’s ancient frescoes, eerie crypt, and the supposed tomb of Vlad. The island’s isolation and mist-covered waters add to its ominous atmosphere, making it one of Romania’s most mysterious historical sites.
