Sex Machines Museum

The Sex Machines Museum is located in the heart of Prague’s Old Town and presents a private collection of historical erotic artefacts, mechanical devices, and early “sex machines” dating from the 16th to the early 20th century. The museum approaches sexuality as a cultural and technological subject, focusing on how desire has been engineered, controlled, and commodified long before the modern era.

Across several floors, exhibits include manually operated devices, early electrical mechanisms, medical instruments, chastity devices, and illustrations documenting how sexuality was understood, regulated, and exploited in different historical contexts. The displays are presented in a museum-like setting rather than as entertainment, with explanatory texts placing the objects in their social and historical framework.

For This Cursed Earth, the museum fits as a site of social taboo rather than shock. It exposes the uneasy overlap between invention, repression, obsession, and curiosity — showing how intimacy has often been shaped by power structures, moral control, and secrecy. The result is less playful than unsettling: a reminder that what is considered “deviant” or hidden often says more about society than about sex itself.
