Seodaemun Prison History Hall

Seodaemun Prison History Hall (서대문형무소역사관), located in Seodaemun Independence Park, Seoul, was originally built by Japanese colonial authorities beginning in 1907 and opened in 1908 as Gyeongseong Prison. It was used to detain Korean independence activists, with occupancy swelling from an original capacity of 500 to as many as 3,000 during peak resistance movements.

The prison became notorious under colonial rule as the site of imprisonment, interrogation, torture, execution, and forced labor. One of Korea’s most revered young heroes, Yu Gwan-sun, was held and tortured here before her death in 1920. It’s estimated that over 40,000 freedom fighters passed through its gates.

After liberation in 1945, the prison continued as a state facility, incarcerating political prisoners, dissenters, and regime opponents until its closure in 1987. Facing demolition, public outcry led to preservation of key structures—including the cellblocks, execution chamber, and interrogation hall—as solemn monuments.

Opening as a museum in 1998, the site now serves as a powerful memorial and educational space. Exhibits reconstruct colonial-era torture traps, solitary confinement cells, and the execution hall with its hidden corpse disposal tunnel. The museum also uses immersive media, survivor stories, and staged artifacts to convey the emotional weight of resistance and suffering.

Part of Seodaemun Independence Park, the museum is complemented by statues, memorials, and public programming on Japan’s colonial repression. Guided tours—available in multiple languages—allow visitors to walk through former solitary cells, women’s prison quarters, the execution yard, and preserved red-brick corridors that still echo with memory.
