A wartime lifeline turned museum, the Sarajevo Tunnel offers a harrowing glimpse into the siege of Sarajevo and the resilience of its citizens under siege.
The Sarajevo Tunnel, also known as the Tunnel of Hope, is a remarkable underground passage that was constructed during the Siege of Sarajevo in the early 1990s. Built in secret beneath the Sarajevo Airport runway, it connected the besieged city with Bosnian-held territory, enabling the transport of food, humanitarian aid, weapons, and people.
Stretching for about 800 metres, the tunnel was dug by hand under constant threat from Serbian forces. Today, a preserved section of the tunnel, along with a small but powerful museum, stands on the site of the Kolar family's house, which served as one of the tunnel entrances during the war.
The museum displays wartime footage, artefacts, photographs, and personal testimonies that shed light on daily life during the siege. Walking through the narrow, dimly lit tunnel gives visitors a visceral sense of the danger and determination that defined Sarajevo’s wartime survival.
