Sagastad Viking Centre

Sagastad Viking Centre is a state-of-the-art knowledge center located in Nordfjordeid, Western Norway, that brings Viking legends to life through archaeology, storytelling, and immersive design. Opened in May 2019, it centers on the Myklebust ship—a full-scale reconstruction of Norway's largest Viking longship, once buried in a royal cremation mound around 870 AD.

The ship was discovered inside the Rundehågjen burial mound on Myklebust farm beneath layers of ash, rivets, shields, and a nameless noble—possibly King Audbjørn of Firda. The vessel’s reconstruction, housed in a circular hall matching the mound’s diameter, sits on a ramp allowing visitors to board it directly.

The exhibition unfolds in three thematic arcs: the Viking Age context of Nordfjordeid; the funeral and cultural meaning of the Myklebust burial; and shipbuilding, voyages, and myth. Interactive elements include VR experiences, quizzes, cinema presentations, and multilingual audio guides.

Remarkably, the reconstruction is seaworthy and is periodically launched into the fjord—a dramatic contemporary ritual echoing its ancient voyage. The architecture’s open-plan hall with glass walls and lofty ceiling amplifies both the visual and acoustical power of the ship and the mythic past it represents.

Supported by the University of Bergen and national research bodies, Sagastad also serves as a cultural venue for lectures, concerts, and community events—turning Viking death rites into living heritage.
