Sad Hill Cemetery

Sad Hill Cemetery was constructed in 1966 in the desolate hills of northern Spain as the climactic location for Sergio Leone’s legendary spaghetti western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. It was here that Blondie, Tuco, and Angel Eyes faced off in the film’s iconic final standoff amid concentric circles of tombstones and Ennio Morricone’s unforgettable score.

After filming wrapped, the site was abandoned for decades, slowly reclaimed by nature. In 2015, a group of dedicated fans began restoring the location, painstakingly uncovering the stone circle and recreating over 5,000 wooden grave markers. Their efforts are chronicled in the documentary *Sad Hill Unearthed* (2017), which highlights the cemetery’s transformation into a cult tourism site.

Today, visitors can walk among the graves, stand at the centre of the showdown circle, and soak in the eerie silence of the Sierra de la Demanda landscape. Though no one is actually buried here, Sad Hill feels haunted by cinematic ghosts—and serves as a tribute to myth, memory, and the enduring power of film.
