Rothwell Bone Crypt

Rothwell Bone Crypt crouches beneath Holy Trinity Church in Rothwell, Northamptonshire—a medieval structure with roots stretching back to the 13th century. This ossuary, one of only two surviving charnel chapels in Britain, was rediscovered in the 1700s when a gravedigger accidentally fell into it and found himself among a sea of bones.

Inside lie the remains of approximately 2,500 individuals—men, women, and children. While the crypt itself dates from the 13th century, radiocarbon testing revealed bones from as late as the early 1900s, suggesting that burials and ossuary practices continued long after the medieval period.

Local legend once speculated that these were battle casualties or plague victims, but academic research—from early estimates to modern osteological studies—indicates the remains likely originate from local parish burials cleared for space. The University of Sheffield has meticulously catalogued and digitally preserved the site.

Visitors descend a narrow spiral staircase into dim vaulted chambers lined with shelves of skulls and central piles of thigh bones. Access is limited—typically available only during Sunday afternoons April to September—and tours are led by church volunteers.
