Predjama Castle

Predjama Castle is one of the most striking and mysterious castles in the world, nestled halfway up a 123-metre cliff in southwestern Slovenia. First mentioned in the 13th century, the castle is famous not only for its gravity-defying location, but for the legend of its most infamous resident—Erazem Lueger, a rebellious knight and robber baron often described as Slovenia’s Robin Hood.

Erazem defied the Habsburg Empire from within the castle, surviving a long siege thanks to a secret tunnel that allowed him to sneak supplies in and out through the caves behind the fortress. According to legend, he was eventually betrayed and killed while using the toilet—struck by a cannonball aimed through a vulnerable spot in the stone walls.

Today, visitors can explore the castle’s medieval chambers, armories, torture room, and cave system. The blend of natural rock and man-made stone makes the interior uniquely eerie. Beneath the castle lies a deep karst cave complex—also home to colonies of bats—adding further gothic atmosphere. For tourists, Predjama offers everything: isolation, legend, resistance, and the shadow of death in stone. Predjama Castle has also been featured in several films and TV shows, including Jackie Chan's Armour of God and the third season of The Witcher. The castle is also said to have inspired the author of Game of Thrones.
