Poveglia Island

Poveglia Island, located in the Venetian Lagoon, has a **dark and horrifying history** that spans centuries. It is often called **'The Island of No Return'** due to the thousands of people who were sent here—never to leave again.

During the Black Death in the 14th century, Poveglia was used as a **plague quarantine zone**, where infected victims were sent to die. Over the years, thousands of bodies were burned, and it is said that the island’s soil is now composed of **50% human ash.**

In the 1920s, the island became home to a **mental asylum**, where it is rumored that a **mad doctor performed cruel experiments on patients**, including lobotomies and electroshock therapy. The doctor later went insane himself and allegedly threw himself from the hospital tower after being 'pushed' by the ghosts of his victims.

Today, Poveglia remains **completely off-limits to visitors**, with the Italian government forbidding entry due to the island’s dark reputation and structural decay. Fishermen refuse to sail near its shores, claiming to hear ghostly screams at night, and some even report seeing strange figures standing among the ruins.
