Port Arthur

Port Arthur is one of Australia's most significant heritage sites, located on the Tasman Peninsula in Tasmania. Established in the 1830s as a penal colony, it housed some of the British Empire’s most hardened convicts. The site was known for its harsh discipline, innovative punishment methods, and the use of psychological isolation, most infamously in the Separate Prison.
Today, the site preserves the ruins and restored buildings of the settlement, including the penitentiary, church, and hospital. Guided tours, boat rides, and interpretive displays offer insight into the brutal conditions faced by prisoners and the colonial penal system’s evolution.
Port Arthur is also marked by a more recent tragedy: in 1996, it was the site of one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern Australian history, an event that profoundly reshaped the nation’s gun laws. A memorial garden and reflection pool honour the victims of the massacre, adding a contemporary layer of sorrow to the already sombre atmosphere.
