Poenari Castle – The Real Dracula’s Fortress
A ruined mountaintop fortress in Romania, once the stronghold of Vlad the Impaler, known for its brutal history and eerie isolation.
High above the Argeș River, Poenari Castle stands as the true fortress of Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure behind the Dracula legend. Unlike Bran Castle, which is often linked to Dracula through fiction, Poenari was one of Vlad’s actual military strongholds. Positioned on a steep cliff, the castle was nearly impenetrable, making it a perfect refuge against Ottoman invasions.
The castle’s bloody history includes a legend that Vlad forced noblemen who betrayed him to march up the mountain and rebuild the fortress, only for them to die from exhaustion or execution. The ruins still carry an unsettling presence, and the long trek to the top—1,480 stone steps—adds to the ominous experience.
Today, visitors who reach the summit are rewarded with breathtaking yet haunting views of the surrounding Carpathian Mountains. Many say they can feel the presence of the past lingering in the cold mountain air, making Poenari Castle one of Romania’s most sinister historical sites.
