Pernštejn Castle

A brooding Gothic stronghold in the Moravian highlands, shrouded in legend, superstition, and sightings of a spectral lady in white. Also featured as Dracula’s castle in both the 1979 and 2024 film adaptations of *Nosferatu*.

Rising from a forested hilltop in South Moravia, Pernštejn Castle is one of the best-preserved Gothic-Renaissance castles in the Czech Republic. Known as the “Marble Castle” for the local marble used in its staircases and architecture, it has stood since the 13th century, its dark towers and labyrinthine halls untouched by siege or time.

But its longevity has done little to dispel the dark legends that surround it. The most persistent is the story of the White Lady—a ghostly woman believed to be a noblewoman wronged and imprisoned within the castle. She is said to appear as a harbinger of doom, her pale form drifting silently through halls and courtyards before tragedy strikes the household.

Visitors report cold spots, strange whispers, footsteps in empty rooms, and eerie feelings of being watched. The castle’s twisting staircases, hidden rooms, and thick stone walls amplify its atmosphere of isolation and dread. Even in daylight, Pernštejn feels like a place removed from the modern world—still steeped in the superstitions of centuries past.

Pernštejn Castle has also become a fixture in horror cinema. It was used as Dracula’s castle in Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), and again in the 2024 adaptation of Nosferatu, further cementing its reputation as a place of cinematic dread and Gothic grandeur. The castle can also be seen in movies like Wanted, Snow White: A Tale of Terror, Journey to the Christmas Star, and Van Helsing.

For those drawn to old castle beauty, Pernštejn Castle offers a chilling glimpse into Czech folklore and the haunted remnants of noble ambition.
