Outpost 51 Alien Museum

Outpost 51 Alien Museum is a privately operated museum in Boulder City, Nevada, devoted to UFOs, alleged extraterrestrial encounters and the folklore surrounding secret government programmes. It was created by special makeup-effects artist Tom Devlin and opened to the public on 5 April 2025. The museum stands close to Devlin’s established Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum and is operated by the same company.

Devlin has worked professionally in film and television special effects, producing creatures, prosthetics and makeup. His early Hollywood work included creating aliens during the final seasons of The X-Files between 2000 and 2002. At Outpost 51, this background is used to create full-scale figures and environments illustrating stories from UFO history rather than presenting a collection of supposed extraterrestrial remains. Information panels and video presentations accompany the reconstructions and explain the cases on which they are based.

One of the principal displays recreates the alleged Kingman UFO crash of 1953. According to later accounts, an unidentified craft supposedly crashed in the desert near Kingman, Arizona, and was recovered by the United States military together with non-human occupants. No contemporary evidence has established that such a crash occurred, and the story largely emerged years after the alleged event. Devlin’s reconstruction shows three small humanoid figures around a flying saucer embedded in rocky terrain.

The museum also covers the Roswell incident of 1947 and the extensive body of claims surrounding Area 51, the highly classified Nevada military installation at Groom Lake. Displays discuss reports of recovered spacecraft, secret aircraft testing, alleged government concealment and the claims of figures such as Bob Lazar, who stated in 1989 that he had worked near Area 51 on attempts to reverse-engineer extraterrestrial spacecraft. Lazar’s claims remain controversial and have never been independently verified.

Another Southern Nevada case represented in the museum concerns a mysterious skeleton reportedly discovered near Nelson’s Landing in 1973. The exhibit presents a recreated desiccated humanoid body based on the story. Other displays cover reported encounters such as that of Jason Sands, who has claimed that while stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in 1994 he encountered a blue non-human being capable of telepathic communication. These stories are presented as part of UFO and alien lore rather than established scientific evidence.

A separate installation recreates the notorious Alien Autopsy footage broadcast internationally in 1995. The black-and-white film was promoted as showing the dissection of an extraterrestrial recovered after the Roswell incident. It attracted considerable media attention, and special-effects professionals initially debated how the body and footage had been produced. Producer Ray Santilli later acknowledged that the film shown to the public was a reconstruction rather than authentic footage of an extraterrestrial autopsy. Outpost 51 recreates the autopsy room and alien figure as part of the history of UFO hoaxes and popular belief.

The collection also includes extraterrestrial figures influenced by science-fiction cinema, including creatures associated with films such as Predator and They Live. This material places alleged real-world UFO cases alongside the visual language developed by Hollywood, particularly the familiar large-headed grey alien and other representations that have shaped public ideas of what extraterrestrial beings are supposed to look like.

Outpost 51 is arranged as a self-guided museum with life-sized displays, spacecraft replicas, informational panels and video material. A gift shop sells alien and UFO-themed merchandise. Together with the neighbouring Monster Museum, it reflects Devlin’s background in practical creature effects while concentrating specifically on the mixture of documented military secrecy, eyewitness claims, conspiracy theories, hoaxes and popular culture that has made Nevada central to modern UFO mythology.
