Located in San Martino della Battaglia, a frazione of Desenzano del Garda in the province of Brescia, the Ossuary Chapel of St. Martin stands as a poignant memorial to the soldiers who fell during the Battle of San Martino on June 24, 1859. This battle was a significant engagement in the Second Italian War of Independence, where the forces of the Kingdom of Sardinia and France confronted the Austrian Empire.
The ossuary is housed within the noble chapel of the Treccani counts and was inaugurated on June 24, 1870. Inside, the chapel contains the skulls and bones of soldiers from both the Sardinian and Austrian armies, meticulously arranged to honor their memory.
The facade of the chapel is adorned with three mosaics created by artists from the Salviati workshop in Venice, adding an artistic touch to this solemn site.
Visitors can also explore the nearby Tower of San Martino della Battaglia, a monument dedicated to King Victor Emmanuel II and those who fought for Italy's unification.
