Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory

Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory is located in the Zabłocie area of Kraków and is best known for its association with Oskar Schindler and the wartime history portrayed in Schindler’s List. The factory complex began as an enamelware and metalworks facility established in the late 1930s. After the German occupation of Poland, Schindler took over the site and operated it as Deutsche Emailwarenfabrik (DEF), producing enamel goods and later items connected to the German war economy.

During the occupation, the factory employed Jewish workers, many of whom were brought from the Kraków Ghetto and later linked to the Płaszów camp system. Schindler’s intervention on behalf of his workers is the central reason the site remains internationally known, with accounts describing how employment at the factory and later evacuation of selected workers contributed to their survival. The building therefore functions as a physical trace of everyday industrial work carried out under coercion, surveillance, and the wider machinery of persecution.

Today, the preserved administrative building houses a museum branch with the permanent exhibition Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939–1945. Rather than focusing only on Schindler, the exhibition presents the wider occupation-era history of Kraków through reconstructed interiors, archival material, photographs, documents, and objects, with significant coverage of the city’s Jewish population, forced labour, policing, and deportations. The setting’s darker significance is direct and historical: a workplace embedded in the infrastructure of occupation, now used to document the mechanisms of control, dispossession, and mass violence that shaped the city during the war.
