New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum

New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum was established in 1972 and is one of the few museums focused specifically on Louisiana Voodoo and related spiritual traditions of the African diaspora. The museum is compact and densely arranged, emphasising objects and imagery associated with ritual practice and local legend, including devotional altars, gris-gris and charm traditions, and artworks that draw on the city’s long-standing mixture of religion, folk magic, and superstition.

Rather than treating Voodoo as spectacle alone, the museum frames it as a living belief system shaped by slavery, colonialism, and cultural survival, while also acknowledging how the tradition has been mythologised through rumours of curses, zombies, and forbidden rites. This tension between lived religion and popular horror is part of the site’s atmosphere: visitors encounter material presented as sacred, intimate, and protective, alongside stories that have historically been used to stigmatise practitioners.

Its darker undertone lies less in theatrics than in what the exhibits imply about power and vulnerability: private prayers turned into public curiosity, spiritual protection in a city marked by violence and hardship, and the way marginalised practices become both feared and commodified. The result is an interior space that feels closer to a cabinet of ritual memory than a conventional museum gallery.
