National Museum of Death

Located in the heart of Aguascalientes, the Museo Nacional de la Muerte (National Museum of Death) offers a comprehensive exploration of death's role in Mexican culture. Established in 2007, the museum originated from the extensive collection of death-related artifacts and art donated by artist Octavio Bajonero Gil. Over time, it has expanded to include works from other contributors, providing a diverse perspective on the theme of mortality.

The museum's exhibits span from pre-Hispanic funerary rites to contemporary artistic interpretations, showcasing items such as sculptures, paintings, wood carvings, and papier-mâché figures. Visitors can observe Day of the Dead altars, whimsical skeletons in everyday scenes, and even a mysterious crystal skull attributed to Mayan origins.

Interactive displays and thematic rooms guide guests through the evolution of death-related customs and beliefs in Mexico. The museum's approach balances reverence and playfulness, reflecting the nation's distinctive attitude toward death as both a solemn and celebratory aspect of life.

Housed within the Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes, the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Admission is affordable, making it accessible to a wide audience interested in understanding the cultural significance of death in Mexican society.
