Mount Osore

Mount Osore (Osorezan) lies on the remote Shimokita Peninsula in northern Honshu and is widely regarded as one of Japan’s most spiritually charged locations. Volcanic, barren, and steeped in sulphur fumes, the landscape has long been associated with death, the afterlife, and the spirits of the departed.

In Buddhist cosmology, Mount Osore is believed to resemble the underworld. Areas such as Sai no Kawara represent the limbo of dead children, where souls are said to stack stones to build towers, only for demons to knock them down again. Visitors still leave small stone piles, windmills, toys, and offerings in memory of lost children, creating a haunting and deeply emotional scene.

At the heart of the site stands Bodai-ji Temple, where blind shamans known as itako traditionally performed rituals to communicate with the dead. The nearby Lake Usori, with its pale blue, mineral-rich waters, is said to separate this world from the next. Walking through Mount Osore today feels less like visiting a mountain and more like crossing into a spiritual borderland — a place where grief, belief, and volcanic desolation merge.
