Montjuïc Castle

Montjuïc Castle (Castell de Montjuïc) crowns the hill of Montjuïc above Barcelona, a military fortress with a long and troubled history. Originally built in 1640 during the Catalan Revolt, it was expanded in the 18th century into the formidable structure seen today. While it has served defensive purposes, its legacy is far darker.

For centuries, Montjuïc Castle functioned as a prison and site of execution. During the Napoleonic Wars, the Spanish Civil War, and under Franco’s dictatorship, the fortress became synonymous with repression. Political prisoners were held and tortured within its walls, and firing squads carried out executions in its courtyards. Among the most famous victims was Catalan president Lluís Companys, executed here in 1940.

The castle’s position, offering sweeping views of the city and harbour, contrasts with its grim reputation. Today, Montjuïc is open to the public as a historical site and cultural venue, but its exhibitions and preserved cells serve as stark reminders of the suffering inflicted there. For Barcelona, the castle remains a symbol of power misused and the heavy cost of repression.
