A monumental World War I memorial honouring over 5,000 Romanian soldiers who died defending their homeland in one of the war’s bloodiest Eastern Front battles.
The Mausoleum of Mărășești is one of Romania’s most significant war memorials, dedicated to the soldiers who perished during the Battle of Mărășești in 1917—an intense confrontation between Romanian and German forces on the Eastern Front of World War I. The battle was a turning point in Romania’s military history, with the rallying cry “Pe aici nu se trece!” (“You shall not pass!”) becoming a national symbol of resistance and sacrifice.
The mausoleum was inaugurated in 1938 and houses the remains of over 5,000 soldiers and officers, including the heroine Ecaterina Teodoroiu, one of Romania’s most iconic wartime figures. The structure is designed in a circular, neo-Byzantine style with a central dome, symbolic reliefs, and ossuary chambers that evoke solemn reverence.
Visitors can walk among sarcophagi, see battle-related artefacts, and reflect on the scale of sacrifice involved in securing Romania’s sovereignty. The site stands not only as a place of mourning but as a powerful reminder of national identity forged through unimaginable hardship and war.
