Lyse Abbey

Lyse Abbey, known in Norwegian as Lysekloster, lies at the end of the Lysefjorden branch near Bergen. Founded in 1146 by Cistercian monks from Fountains Abbey in England, it was the first Cistercian monastery in Norway. The order was known for strict discipline, isolation, and a life shaped by silence, labour, and prayer — values reflected in the abbey’s remote setting and austere stone architecture.

For nearly four centuries, Lyse Abbey functioned as a religious and economic centre, controlling land, farms, and resources in the surrounding area. That ended abruptly with the Reformation in the 1530s, when the monastery was dissolved and its property seized by the Danish crown. The buildings were stripped, dismantled, and repurposed as a convenient stone quarry for nearby estates, accelerating the abbey’s decay.

Today, the remaining ruins are sparse but powerful: low walls, foundations, and fragments that outline the former church and cloister. Surrounded by forest and hills, Lyse Abbey feels quietly heavy rather than dramatic — a place marked by loss of purpose and slow erasure. It is a site where religious authority collapsed without violence, leaving behind silence, moss, and the memory of a disciplined life abruptly ended.

In 1992, the Norwegian black metal band Immortal released their debut album “Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism” with cover art featuring images taken in the ruins of Lysekloster. These are also the ruins where Immortal filmed the famous amateur music video for “The Call of the Wintermoon.”
