Leap Castle

One of the most haunted and sinister places in Ireland, Leap Castle is a medieval stronghold infamous for its bloody history, ghost stories, and supernatural legends.

Leap Castle, built around 1250 by the O’Bannon clan in County Offaly, Ireland, stands on a site believed to have been sacred since the Iron Age or even Neolithic times. Its name comes from a deadly ritual: two O’Bannon brothers allegedly leapt from a large rock to determine who would rule — the survivor becoming clan leader, in what became known as “Leap of the O’Bannons.”

The castle’s most notorious chapter unfolded in 1532, when one O’Carroll brother murdered another — a priest — mid-mass in the chapel. That gruesome act earned the chamber its enduring name: the “Bloody Chapel.”

In the late 19th and early 20th century, owner Mildred Darby practiced séances and occult rituals that helped cement the castle’s haunted reputation. She is said to have awakened a demonic elemental spirit — described as a hunched, inhuman creature with rotting flesh and the stench of sulfur and decay.

During renovations in the 1920s, workers discovered a hidden oubliette (dungeon) behind a trapdoor in the chapel. Inside were the impaled remains of dozens of victims — it reportedly took three cartloads to remove the bones.

Leap Castle is now privately owned, but visitors can book tours with the current resident. Paranormal investigators and TV crews frequently explore its haunted halls. Regularly featured on shows like Ghost Hunters, Most Haunted, and Ghost Adventures, the castle is said to be haunted by numerous spirits: a Red Lady, two ghostly girls (Emily and Charlotte), the murdered priest, and the malevolent Elemental simply known as “It.”
