Hotel Gellért – Budapest’s Haunted Grandeur

Standing at the foot of Gellért Hill and beside the legendary thermal baths that share its name, Hotel Gellért is one of Budapest’s most famous and imposing hotels. Opened in 1918, it has witnessed revolutions, bombings, and secret police surveillance—and many claim the building has absorbed its share of lingering spirits.

The hotel was damaged during World War II and later used during the communist era, with tales of bugged rooms, hushed interrogations, and unexplained sounds in the halls. Staff and guests have reported phantom footsteps, doors closing on their own, and figures seen in mirrors. The upper floors and basement corridors are said to be particularly active at night.

Beyond its ghostly atmosphere, Hotel Gellért has also gained attention in pop culture. It appears in the film Red Sparrow (2018) and was used as inspiration and location in the video game Hitman, where its opulent style and moody lighting made it the perfect stage for shadowy intrigue and assassination.
