Harastølen

Harastølen, originally known as Lyster Sanatorium, sits dramatically on a remote hillside roughly 500 metres above Luster and the Lustrafjord in Vestland, Norway. Opened in 1902, it was built as a tuberculosis sanatorium at a time when isolation, fresh air, and strict routines were seen as “treatment.” The scale was extreme: a self-contained institution with its own infrastructure, including power and extensive support buildings, designed to keep patients apart from the outside world.

As tuberculosis care changed, Harastølen was repurposed and later became a psychiatric hospital (1959–1991). The site’s imposing corridors, locked wards, and long institutional history have fuelled a lasting aura of unease — amplified after it was left empty and began to rot. In recent decades it also became a magnet for urban explorers and ghost hunters, and it was used as a filming location for the Norwegian horror film Villmark Asylum. Black metal band Vreid also used Harastølen for their music videos for their 2021 album "Wild North West".

Today, Harastølen is widely treated as one of Norway’s most infamous abandoned places. Access has been restricted at times due to danger and trespassing issues, while separate plans have been announced to transform parts of the complex into a hotel. Whether you see it as medical history, social history, or modern ruin-romanticism, Harastølen feels like a monument to isolation — a place built to keep sickness (and later suffering) out of sight.
