Hỏa Lò Prison

Hỏa Lò Prison, built by French colonists between 1896 and 1901 in Hanoi’s French Quarter, was originally named "Maison Centrale"—a facility for imprisoning Vietnamese political dissidents. Its walls, constructed from thick yellow stone and topped with barbed wire and broken glass, earned it reputations in Vietnamese as "fiery furnace" or “hell’s hole.”

Under French rule, the prison became notorious for cramped cells, torture, and executions—complete with a guillotine still on display. It evolved into a stark symbol of colonial repression as Vietnamese independence fighters were incarcerated within its walls.

During the Vietnam War, American airmen captured by North Vietnam were held here, sarcastically naming it the “Hanoi Hilton.” POWs lived under brutal conditions—illness, neglect, and psychological strain—alongside narrow cells, solitary confinement (the “Cachot”), and even a mock-luxury wing dubbed "Little Vegas."

The prison remained active post-war, detaining political dissidents like poet Nguyễn Chí Thiện until the mid-1980s. In 1993–94, much of the complex was demolished for urban development, leaving only the gatehouse and a fragment preserved as a museum.

Today, the museum displays reconstructed cells with ankle shackles, original prison doors, the guillotine, and exhibition rooms dedicated to various eras of imprisonment—French colonial rule, revolutionary resistance, and POW captivity. U.S. veterans have criticized how the POW experience is downplayed.

Hoa Lò remains a bleak witness to oppression and resilience—where the physical remains and stories of suffering endure through history.
