Grave of Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe, the literary master of the macabre, lies buried at Westminster Hall and Burying Ground in Baltimore, Maryland. Though he died in 1849 under mysterious circumstances, his legacy endures—and nowhere more vividly than at his grave.

Originally interred in an unmarked spot in the rear of the cemetery, Poe’s remains were moved in 1875 to a more prominent memorial near the entrance, marked by a striking marble headstone. His first burial site, now marked with a smaller stone, is still preserved within the graveyard—a rare dual tribute for a man whose life was divided by tragedy and genius.

For decades, an anonymous figure known as the Poe Toaster visited the grave on Poe’s birthday (January 19), leaving behind a half-empty bottle of cognac and three roses before vanishing into the night. The tradition became a local legend, and though the original toaster’s identity remains unknown, new ones have since carried the torch.

The cemetery itself, tucked beside an old church and beneath a web of crooked shadows, is appropriately eerie. Weathered headstones, vaults, and crypts surround Poe’s grave, echoing the death-haunted themes of his writing.
