Fengselshotellet (The Prison Hotel)
A former 19th-century prison in Arendal, Norway, now a unique hotel where guests sleep in renovated cells and can take guided tours through its dark past.
Fengselshotellet occupies the historic former district prison of Arendal, built in 1862 in red-brick neo-romantic style. Closed decades ago, it reopened as a themed hotel in 2014—offering stays in 24 newly renovated prison cells complete with toilet, sink, Wi-Fi, and themed cell decor.
The rooms are compact (around 9 m²) but authentic, each featuring black-and-white patterned walls and a unique photograph evoking the prison motif. Guests can choose single, double or triple‑occupancy cells, including a recently added “director’s suite” with a kitchenette and view over Arendal’s center (renovated in 2022).
The hotel also runs immersive guided tours led by a former inmate, who offers candid stories of prison life, notable escapes, and behind-the-scenes access to areas not available to overnight guests. Visitors can even don prison uniforms for photo opps or group events.
Tripadvisor and booking reviews praise the place for maintaining authenticity, being well-preserved, yet offering comfortable guest experiences and friendly, informative staff. Many describe it as a “quirky, must-see hotel” offering more than just a bed.
