Elingaard

Elingaard Herregård on Onsøy outside Fredrikstad is one of Norway’s most complete manor complexes, with roots stretching back to the Middle Ages. The main house visitors see today dates from 1749, rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1746, while older vaulted cellars and the fortified setting (with moats and earthworks) keep a heavier, almost castle-like atmosphere beneath the elegant facade.

The figure that truly defines Elingaard’s dark charisma is Birgitte Christine Kaas (1682–1761), born at Elingård and later known by the nickname “General-Birthe.” Married to the military officer Henrik Jørgen Huitfeldt, she was widely described as the real authority on the estates, running Elingård and other properties with a firm hand while her husband was away. She was also educated, wrote poetry, and is known for hymn work, but it’s her reputation as a commanding, uncompromising manager that made the nickname stick.

After her death, the folklore began to harden into something darker. Stories persist that General-Birthe still walks the rooms and corridors of Elingaard, and the museum context around the site has helped keep the legend alive as part of the manor’s identity. Whether you treat it as ghost lore or as a cultural echo of power, class and fear, Elingaard is inseparable from the idea that its most formidable mistress never truly left.
