Drave
An abandoned mountain village in northern Portugal, slowly reclaimed by nature and silence, often described as a ghost village.
Drave lies hidden in the mountains of the Serra da Freita, reachable only on foot via old paths that once connected small rural communities. The village was gradually abandoned during the 20th century as residents left for work, education, and easier lives elsewhere. By the 1990s, Drave was effectively empty, its houses left to weather, plants, and time.
The remains are stark but intimate: stone houses with collapsed roofs, overgrown terraces, and a small church standing at the heart of the settlement. There are no roads, no electricity, and no modern infrastructure. The isolation is total, and the quiet can feel oppressive — broken only by wind, water, and the occasional footsteps of hikers.
Drave’s power comes from absence rather than violence. It is a place shaped by slow disappearance, where everyday life simply stopped. Walking through the ruins feels like moving through a paused moment, making Drave one of Portugal’s most atmospheric examples of rural abandonment — unsettling not because of what happened here, but because of what quietly ended.
