Drakkar-Leviathan
A monumental Arctic sculpture on Vardøya combining Viking imagery and apocalyptic symbolism, set against one of Norway’s most exposed coastal landscapes.
Drakkar-Leviathan stands on the northern edge of Vardøya as a stark, almost mythic presence facing the Barents Sea. The sculpture fuses the form of a Viking longship (drakkar) with the biblical sea monster Leviathan, creating a hybrid figure that feels both ancient and ominously modern.
Isolated and wind-beaten, the site amplifies the work’s impact. There are no railings, no visitor infrastructure, and no attempt to soften the environment. The sculpture rises directly from the rocky ground, surrounded by open sea and Arctic weather, where fog, storms, and shifting light can radically change the mood within minutes.
Drakkar-Leviathan works as a contemporary counterpart to the region’s older layers of darkness: wartime ruins, witch-trial history, and the constant presence of the Arctic Ocean. It is not a memorial to a specific event, but a symbol-heavy marker of power, fear, and myth — a place where Norse heritage and end-of-the-world imagery collide in total isolation.
