Dongguan Opium War Museum
A solemn museum in southern China preserving the memory of the devastating Opium Wars and the human cost of imperial greed.
Located in Humen, Dongguan, the Opium War Museum stands on the very ground where fierce battles were fought during the First Opium War (1839–1842). This historical site is dedicated to the struggle against British imperialism and the tragic consequences of the opium trade in China.
The museum features extensive exhibits detailing the events that led to the war, including confiscated opium tools, replicas of ships, and firsthand accounts of the brutal conflict. A key highlight is the Lin Zexu Memorial Hall, honouring the Qing Dynasty official who famously destroyed massive quantities of opium in defiance of foreign powers.
Outside, the remnants of gun emplacements and forts overlook the Pearl River Delta—silent witnesses to the chaos of the 19th century. The museum is not only a place of learning but a space heavy with national trauma, reflecting the suffering, humiliation, and resistance of the Chinese people during a dark chapter in their history.
