Domen

Domen is a steep, windswept mountain rising above the Arctic landscape near Vardø in Finnmark. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it became central to one of the darkest chapters in Norwegian history: the Finnmark witch trials. According to contemporary belief, Domen was the place where witches gathered for sabbaths, entered pacts with the Devil, and travelled to Hell.

These accusations had devastating consequences. Between 1600 and 1692, 91 people — mostly women — were executed in Finnmark after being accused of witchcraft. Many were tortured into confessing that they had flown to Domen, often entering through caves beneath the mountain, where the Devil awaited. From there, they were said to have been carried to Blåkulla or directly to Hell itself.

Today, Domen stands silent, overlooking the Barents Sea. There are no structures or signs to mark the suffering it inspired, only the raw landscape and the knowledge of what unfolded nearby. The mountain has become a powerful symbol of fear, superstition, and religious fanaticism — a place where myth and paranoia cost real human lives. Few sites in Scandinavia carry such a heavy, unspoken weight.
